When shopping for citrine realize the stone can fall into one of two categories: heat treated citrine or natural citrine. True citrine, non-heat treated is expensive and more rare. The majority of citrine on the market is actually heat treated amethyst. Natural citrine is rare and heat treated quartz with the yellow citrine color is common, hence the cost difference between the two stones.
Is Citrine Fake or Real?
Natural citrine and heat-treated citrine are both real minerals. Natural citrine is heated naturally, by the earth, before it is mined. Heat-treated citrine is amethyst super heated. It is mined and then super heated to obtain the yellow color. Whether or not the "citrine" was heated from the Earth or after it left the mine is what determines the difference between natural citrine and heat-treated citrine.
