Chakras 101: Basics for Beginners

Chakras is a word often associated with the New Age movement, suggesting the concept is modern and new. However, The Vedas, one of the oldest religious texts in history recorded the concept of a chakra system within the human body.

What are Chakras?

Simply stated your chakras are energy points in your body.

When translated from Sanskrit, chakra means "wheel." It is believed the human body has an energy circle that are connected to certain nerves. These energy points can be become blocked and unbalanced. When this happens humans can experience both physical and emotional symptoms.

The spiritual goal is to keep your chakras open so the energy can flow through your body, keep your energy balanced and you can attain a higher consciousness. In Hinduism, chakras are your life energy or Prana.

What are the Seven Chakras?

According to Hinduism, the body consists of seven chakras, which include your root, sacral, solar plexus, heart, throat, third-eye, and crown chakra.

The primary or physical chakras correspond with physical elements such as the earth, water, fire and air.

Your heart chakra connects your three physical energy points to your three spiritual energy points within your body. Your spiritual chakras include the Throat, Third-eye, and Crown.
